Body Contouring
Because of the
many miraculous health benefits of bariatric surgery,
a relatively new, safe and important subspecialty in
plastic surgery has been prompted. This new "subspecialty"
is termed Post-Bariatric Body Contouring.
Following weight loss, deflated and excess tissues can
lead to mild to moderate deformities as well as other
physical, emotional, and psychosocial issues.
Post-bariatric body contouring is used to treat deformity,
wounds, and rashes. There are multiple body contouring
procedures. The most common are breast augmentation,
abdominoplasty, arm lift, and thigh lift as well as the
use of liposuction.
The "Core" is
Key: Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
For the nearly 100,000 Americans undergoing
weight reduction surgery, every year, the health benefits
and return to wellness have been well documented.
Many
of patients undergo deformational changes in the skin
and remaining fat following significant weight loss.
These changes can present other less severe problems
which prompt many patients to seek correction by Plastic
Surgery.
The changes after weight loss can affect
multiple body areas, and have varying degrees of severity.
There are as many corrective procedures as there are
problems. The mainstay of post-bariatric body contouring
however, is the repair of the lower abdomen/torso (abdominoplasty
or panniculectomy). Alterations in this area will affect
all other body parts as healing progresses, and should
be performed first.
Benefits include: prevention
of rashes and chafing, improved shape, greater physical
mobility, and sometimes reduction in pain and discomfort.

risks can occur
Liposuction
as a Supplement
To refine the operative re-contouring,
liposuction is often used as a supplemental sculpting
tool. Liposuction removes the fat between the skin-complex
and the deep muscle. A straw-shaped surgical instrument
is used to remove specifically targeted fat. It can remarkably
improve "lumpy" areas
of diet resistant fat.
The operations are usually performed on an outpatient
basis. They are considered major operations and require
general anesthesia. The usual recovery time is between
10 and 15 days. During that time special compression
garments and drainage tubes have to be worn. Healing
changes and slight discomfort continue for up to two
months.
