StomaphyX® works
by reducing the size and compliance of the stomach
pouch after bariatric surgery. This slows the flow
of food into the intestine and reduces the amount
of food that can be eaten at any one time. Patients
have experienced improvement in reflux, dumping syndrome
and symptomatic diarrhea and a level of satiety reminiscent
of shortly after their bariatric procedure.
What happens during treatment?
The StomaphyX® procedure
is performed safely, quickly, comfortably with no incisions
and requires minimal patient downtime. Before your procedure
you will be asked not to eat or drink for 12 hours. Prior
to your procedure, you will be given general anesthesia.
While you are sleeping, the flexible StomaphyX® device
will be gently lowered through your mouth into your stomach.
Once inside the stomach, a small section of the stomach
wall will be pulled into the device and fastened with
a suture-like fastener creating a fold called a plication.
Plications may be created closer to the stoma and/or
closer to the place where the esophagus meets the stomach
to address specific conditions. Typically 20 or so plications
will be created resulting in reduction of the size of
the stomach by 50% or greater. Depending on your medical
condition, you may or may not be requested to stay the
night in the hospital.
What can I expect after treatment?
Most patients can return
to work the next day or within a few days following their
StomaphyX® procedure. You should expect to experience some discomfort
in your chest, nose and/or throat for the first few days
to one week after your procedure.
You will be asked to restrict physical activity and will
be given dietary guidelines to help maximize your success.
What results can I expect?
StomaphyX® is a tool that will aid weight
loss in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise
and strict adherence to post procedure instructions provided
by your surgeon. Although results vary, our experience
has shown significant weight loss with an average of
20% of excess body weight lost in as little as 3 months.
In addition, substantial improvement to complete resolution
of symtoms may be experienced by those patients suffering
from post bariatric reflux (GERD) and severe dumping
syndrome.
Is StomaphyX® safe?
The StomaphyX® procedure
has been shown to be safe in clinical use in practices
worldwide. Because StomaphyX® is inserted
through the mouth, and there
are no incisions, it is nearly non-invasive.
How it Works
StomaphyX® device is gently lowered
through the mouth into the stomach pouch
Inside the stomach pouch a large
tissue fold is suctioned into the chamber and fastened
into place with a suture-like fastener, creating
a large plication
Multiple plications
created, reducing the volume of the stomach pouch
Who can benefit
from StomaphyX®?
StomaphyX® can be used
to restore gastric pouch restriction, reduce pouch compliance,
slow the passage of solid food into the intestine and
create a barrier to reflux.
StomaphyX® can be used as a follow-up to:
Gastric bypass, like Roux-en-Y Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (Mason procedure, stomach
stapling) Sleeve gastrectomy BPD with or without Duodenal Switch
StomaphyX® has been shown clinically to:
Aid weight loss after bariatric procedures Reduce or eliminate gastroesophageal reflux (GERD)
post bariatric surgery Reduce or resolve dumping syndrome including symptomatic
hypoglycemia and diarrhea in some patients
While most bariatric
patients are success stories, Now there is
a No Incision solution for post bariatric patients
who
Need a little help for continuing weight
loss Have experienced some weight regain Are suffering from heartburn/reflux Are experiencing severe dumping syndrome
(including symptomatic hypoglycemia and diarrhea)
Why am I gaining weight after bariatric
surgery?
Many bariatric procedures incorporate
a restrictive component. By reducing the size of the
stomach and/or the flow of food into the intestine, food
consumption can be reduced and weight loss, often dramatic,
is possible. Unfortunately for those trying to lose weight,
the stomach is a very compliant organ. Even with drastic
reduction in size during surgery, over time, the stomach
pouch and/or stoma (opening from the stomach pouch to
intestines) can stretch allowing food to move more rapidly
into the intestine, allowing larger meals, lessening
that "full" feeling (satiety), and potentially leading
to weight gain.
